5 things to know about the new ‘Captain America: Civil War’ trailer – USA TODAY

Holy fight superheroes, Batman Iron Man.

Captain America: Civil War, the second superhero vs. superhero movie of the year, dropped a new trailer on Thursday, proceeding to break the Internet (OK, well, a certain segment of the Internet totally freaked out, anyways). Not only did the trailer introduce the latest incarnation of Spider-Man (heyo), it also cleared up a lot of things when it comes to the aforementioned heroes taking each other on. We broke it down into the five things you absolutely need to know.

1. Spider-Man is here and he’s on Team Iron Man

Yes, nerds, it finally happened: You have Spider-Man in a Marvel movie. This is not either of the Spider-Men (Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield) that you knew from their solo movies (Sony had the rights to the character for  a while now Sony and Marvel are playing nice and sharing). This is Tom Holland, the 19-year-old you may have seen in In the Heart of the Sea who is taking on the role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We get just a smidge of him in the trailer but we learn a lot about him in those few frames. The costume is very old-school, he’s sporting mechanical web-slingers (like Garfield’s version and unlike Maguire’s), Iron Man calls him “Underoo” and he can take down Cap in a single leap. Not bad for an introduction, kiddo.

2. The Avengers’ past is catching up to them

This trailer has a bit of a different focus than the first one for the film, which made it seem as if Cap’s support for his good, old, brain-washed pal Bucky was the reason that all the heroes were at each others’ throats. This trailer makes it clearer that the problem is all the destruction and chaos our heroes have caused in the past (you know, those 12 movies you’ve definitely seen). In case you didn’t catch the clips, “New York” refers to the alien invasion at the end of The Avengers, “Washington, D.C.” was when Cap crashed a couple flying aircraft carriers into the Potomac River and “Sokovia” was the destruction caused when a homicidal robot tried to turn a city into a meteor and destroy the Earth in Avengers: Age of Ultron. The heroes were trying to save the world in all of these instances, but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t collateral damage. And clearly Iron Man and Cap disagree about what they should do about it.

3. Something bad happened to Rhodey

Did this trailer just spoil a major plot point from the movie? Is Rhodey, aka James Rhodes, aka War Machine, dead? The trailer shows him being shot with an RPG-type weapon by Bucky and then plunging to Earth. When Tony removes his mask there is blood and his eyes are closed. In the Civil War storyline in the comics that the movie is based on, there are some casualties. Is Rhodey the first?

4. Black Panther is here and he is awesome

Welcome to the fold, T’challa! It’s so very, very nice to have you. In addition to debuting Spider-Man, Civil War is debuting Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther, who is actually a bit more of an exciting hero and one we haven’t already seen two actors play in the last 10 years. He was barely in the first trailer but this time around, he’s given his rightful due. It seems Team Iron Man is a little stacked.

5. You’re going to get a lot of answers to “who will beat who”

Scarlet Witch vs. Vision? Winter Soldier vs. Black Panther? Hawkeye and Ant-Man vs. Iron Man? It seems the Russo brothers, who are directing the film, have answered our prayers for as many hero-on-hero fights as (super)humanly possible. As long as there is more of Ant-Man taking a ride on Hawkeye’s arrow, we’re OK with that.
