JACKSON COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) – Alabama A&M University announced Thursday that football player Danny Johnson died in a morning wreck in Dutton.

“This is a tragic loss for the Alabama A&M University family,” said Director of Athletics Bryan Hicks. “Danny was a fine young man, a hard worker on the field and off. Our condolences go out to the Johnson family.”

Alabama State Troopers say the two-vehicle crash happened at 8:10 a.m. at the intersection of Alabama Highway 40 and Jackson County Road 124 on Thursday. Johnson, 20, was killed when the 2011 Kia he was a passenger in collided head-on with a 1999 Dodge pickup driven by Travis Clifford, 21, of Dutton.

Officials say Johnson was not using a seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene. Clifford and the driver of the Kia, Selina Tiara Brown, 19, of Huntsville, were transported to an area hospital for treatment of their injuries.

Johnson was a sophomore at the university and served as a two-year starter on the Bulldogs’ defense. In the 2015 season, Johnson finished second on the team with 30 solo tackles and he broke up four passes.

“It is with great sadness that we share the tragic news of Danny’s passing,” said AAMU Head Coach James Spady. “He and his brother DeVon were two of our first signees.”

Johnson was also a graduate of J.O. Johnson High School, signing with the Bulldogs in 2014. His twin brother, DeVon, plays wide receiver for the Bulldogs. Both also ran track for AAMU.

“Danny was an important member of our football family and a fine student. We ask everyone to join us in prayer for his family and keep them in your thoughts in this time of sadness,” said Spady.

Many took to social media Thursday to share their condolences, including Johnson’s cousin, Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jordan Matthews.

In his freshman year, Johnson received an honorable mention as Defensive Back Performer of the Week by College Football Performance Awards.

He blocked a point-after try which proved to be the margin of victory in Alabama A&M’s 37-36 win over Alabama State in the Magic City Classic. Johnson also had an endzone interception and 5 tackles for the Bulldogs in the game.

Funeral arrangements will be announced.
