BYU football punter and three-time national rugby champion Jonny Linehan announced that he’s skipping rugby this season to focus on football.
“Rugby will always be my favorite sport,” Linehan said in a Twitter post Friday. “It is part of who I am (and) part of my identity as a New Zealander. … However, as I’ve been given the opportunity to play football here, I’ve (prayed) and pondered what decision to make regarding what I should do. With the help of my family, I have decided to focus on football this semester and not play rugby.”
Linehan — commonly known as Jonny Rugby — is coming off his first year with the football team. He averaged 42.7 yards per punt (39th in Division I) for the 9-4 Cougars.
“Part of of my reason for choosing to stick with football is I didn’t achieve my personal goals I set for myself last year,” he said. “I am far too competitive to give up (and) settle for less than my best.”
The Cougars will open up spring camp on March 1. He has one year of eligibility left.
“This season will be special,” Linehan said. “I am 100 (percent) committed (and) ready to do what it takes for this team. I love BYU.”
