Case again finance minister reportedly reopened
The City Press is reporting the case against Pravin Gordhan was formally transferred to Crime Intelligence.
JOHANNESBURG – After the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) assured South Africans that Finance Minister Pravin Gordhanfaces no arrest for his alleged involvement in the South African Revenue Service (Sars) rogue unit, it’s now emerged that the case against him and other Sars officials has been reopened.
The City Press is reporting that the police docket containing the case, brought by Sars Commissioner Tom Moyane, was formally transferred to the Crime Intelligence Unit this week.
The paper says it obtained the records of the case number, which was initially opened by Moyane last May.
The City Press says it has spoken to a senior Crime Intelligence commander, who says the case against the finance minister and other senior Sars officials was transferred to the unit because other arms of the police were not making sufficient progress.
The informant says they were asked to cooperate in the investigation with the Hawks.
The paper says the docket history also reveals that the Hawks were never formally tasked with investigating the case.
Now, questions have been raised about why the Hawks sent Gordhan a list of 27 questions to answer at a time when the case had officially been dropped.
The Hawks maintain there is no investigation against the finance minister.
