Celeb superlatives: Audiences ‘roar’ for Katy Perry and Dolly Parton – USA TODAY

USA TODAY’s Jaleesa Jones digs through the latest celebrity news for highlights … and lowlights. Think high school yearbook superlatives — if Lilly Wachowski and Miranda Lambert were classmates.

Most dynamic duo: Katy Perry and Dolly Parton

Perry is a firecracker,  and that extends to the pop singer’s sartorial choices as well. Perry — who joined the stage at the 2016 Academy of Country Music Awards alongside Parton — gave audiences a bit of cowgirl couture with a red Jeremy Scott dress and bubblegum pink cowboy boots. For her part, Parton appeared in a Coat of Many Colors. Or shall we say sequins? The duo performed a medley of Parton’s hits, including Coat of Many Colors, Jolene and 9 to 5.

Most thoughtful acceptance speech: Lilly Wachowski

A month after she came out as transgender, the director made her first public appearance since her transition at the 27th annual GLAAD Media Awards. Wachowski accepted the award for outstanding drama series for her acclaimed Netflix series, Sense8, and addressed the spotlight on her gender identity during her acceptance speech. “There’s a critical eye being cast back on Lana’s and my work through the lens of our trans-ness,” she said, referencing her filmmaker sister, who is also transgender. “This is a cool thing because it’s an excellent reminder that art is never static. … The bedrock that all ideas rest upon is love.”

Sweetest backstory: The Simpsons’ “Burns Cage” episode

Confirming references made in previous episodes, the April 3 episode of The Simpsons acknowledged that Waylon Smithers Jr. is gay. Yet in “The Burns Cage,” Smithers’ sexuality is refreshingly treated as a mere fact of life as opposed to a life-altering revelation. Even sweeter? In an interview with the New York Post, the writer behind the episode — Rob LaZebnik — revealed the storyline was a tribute to his son Johnny, who is gay. “I am a Midwestern guy, so I don’t tend to wear my emotions on my sleeve, but I thought, ‘What better way to tell my son I love him than to write a cartoon about it?'” he said.

Style inspiration: Miranda Lambert

Before she took the stage to accept the award for best female vocalist of the year, Lambert already had won the Academy of Country Music Awards’ red carpet. In her first public appearance with now-confirmed boyfriend musician Anderson East, the country singer wore a plunging yellow Christian Siriano gown and polished off the look with a turquoise necklace and fuchsia Joyce Echols stilettos, complete with a toy gun and holster.

Funniest workout flop: Taylor Swift

Swift is still shaking off her latest Apple Music ad. In the promotional clip, the pop songstress steps on a treadmill, cues up a playlist and begins rapping to Drake and Future’s What A Time To Be Alive track, Jumpman. However, in the midst of finding “her tempo,” the singer loses her balance and wipes out. In a tweet amplifying the clip, Swift cheekily wrote “Based on true events” alongside the hashtag #TaylorVsTreadmill.
