LAS VEGAS – UFC, you’ve got a new superstar to fill out your first trip to Cleveland.

UFC bantamweight Cody Garbrandt (9-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) wants on the UFC 203 pay-per-view card on Sept. 10 at Quicken Loans Arena, he announced Sunday after knocking out Brazilian prospect Thomas Almeida (20-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) in the first round of their headliner at UFC Fight Night 88.

Is there anyone in particular Garbrandt wants to stand across from in the octagon? The short answer is no, despite several attempts from reporters to extract a name from the undefeated Team Alpha Male product, who picked up his ninth pro win in as many attempts.

But Garbrandt will say this about his next opponent: He should be prepared for head trauma.

“No interest in any name, just whoever wants to come dance with me at UFC 203 in Cleveland,” he said. “Strap those boots on night, because I’m going to knock you out of them.”

A bold prediction for an otherwise humble fighter, who picked up the biggest win of his career to date, and no less, on the biggest stage, where he claims he shine brightest.

A native of Uhrichsville, Ohio, Garbrandt has plenty of reason to want to join the card, which currently is headlined by Cleveland-area resident Stipe Miocic (15-2 MMA, 9-2 UFC), who just made his city proud by winning the UFC heavyweight title earlier this month at UFC 198 and will face Alistair Overeem (41-14 MMA, 6-3 UFC) in the UFC 203 main event.

Garbrandt rolled his eyes when asked if he was interested in the winner of an upcoming bantamweight rematch between ex-champ T.J. Dillashaw (12-3 MMA, 8-3 UFC), with whom he has personal history, and Raphael Assuncao (23-4 MMA, 7-1 UFC) at UFC 200.

“Anybody that’s ahead of me intrigues me – anybody that’s another stepping stone for me to get to the title, that’s what I got into this sport for, to be a world champion,” Garbrandt said. “I made a pact to my buddy Maddux Maple, that he beat cancer and I was going to bring the title back to my city. I’m on a vision quest and that’s what I want to do – to be a world champion and give him the world title.”

In case you missed it, Garbrandt and Maple made this pact prior to his first UFC appearance. Now in his fourth, Garbrandt is quickly making good on his promise. With Maple outside the cage at Sunday’s fight with Almeida, the opposite is true, as well.

“I saw him when I walked out,” Garbrandt said. “I know it’s part of me to keep those good times coming now that it’s in remission. He’s doing well. He picks the hand that knocks them out. He’s been 100 percent with the right hand. I trust in that damn thing.”
