STORYLINE
France’s most recognisable monument, the Eiffel Tower, was shut because of a strike on Tuesday.
The company which manages the tower says the CGT (Confederation Generale du Travail) union, which represents most of the Eiffel Tower’s 300 workers, called for a walkout on Tuesday morning.
Company director Nicolas Lefebvre told the Associated Press that management and the union were in negotiations over salary raises, company profit-sharing policy and other issues.
Emilie, who works at the Eiffel Tower and is member of the CGT said they had three grievances.
“First of all we are not satisfied with our working conditions and with conditions visitors experience here. We denounce the bad management of the works on the Eiffel Tower. The works on the West Pillar lift are still being pursued when initially it was supposed to last two years. And finally we are not happy with the security problems here which are linked to the presence of pickpockets.”
Visitors to the French capital were, not surprisingly, disappointed to find the attraction closed.
“We came all the way to see Paris and it’s really not nice leaving Paris before going up Eiffel,” said a tourist from Turkey.
The 124-year-old tower, normally open 365 days a year, sees about 25,000 tourists daily.
It occasionally closes because of suicide threats, bomb threats or strikes.
