I am not sure what the Macedonian Interior Minister Oliver Spasovski and Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico were thinking when they walked down to the double fence line which now separates Macedonia and Greece.

It is unlikely that they wanted to be confronted with the consequences of their governments’ actions.

Both countries, along with other central European nations, have decided to severely limit the number of migrants transiting north to Germany and beyond.

But a confrontation is exactly what they got from a sea of desperate faces on the Greek side of the line, pushed up against the fence.

“Open the gates, open the gates,” said one middle-aged migrant.

It was an awkward situation and the two politicians chose to ignore the migrants’ pleas.

Instead, they reviewed the defences and chatted with members of the police and armed forces standing guard.

This of course, was the purpose of their trip – to look at the outer edge of ‘fortress Europe’.

Over on the other side, a one-horse-type Greek town called Idomeni has been consumed by Europe’s migration crisis.

The stubbly fields which surround it are dotted with colourful if flimsy looking tents, populated by well over 10,000 Syrians, Iraqis and others – all trying to claim asylum in the EU.
