A former Kansas rower has filed a lawsuit against the school claiming she was raped by a football player in a university owned dorm 16 months ago, and that the school “failed to protect her from harassment by her attacker,” according to the Dallas Morning News.
The suit, which was filed in Kansas by Daisy Trackett’s parents (her name was released at her own request),states that she was raped in the Jayhawker Tower Apartments in Nov. 2014.
That particular dorm is where many of the university’s football players and athletes live, according to the lawsuit, which alleges a history of reported assaults on women there. The suit lists eight instances of sexual crimes in the past three years, including rape and sexual battery, noting that there were two instances where Kansas football players were arrested.
Tackett claims in the lawsuit that she was made to feel unwelcome on the rowing team after she reported the rape. In the lawsuit, she says that she decided to come forward and report the incident after she learned that the same football player had tried to assault one of her teammates.
The lawsuit alleges that the university’s Office of Institutional Opportunity and Access, which oversees sexual assault and discrimination claims on campus, did not offer her the assistance needed.
“They made it so difficult to access the resources they had,” she said. “For the last three weeks of [the] semester, I locked myself in my room. I would leave just to practice and go to class.”
