Football recruit reactions from Rutgers junior day, Part 2 –

8 months ago Comments Off on Football recruit reactions from Rutgers junior day, Part 2 –

The new Rutgers staff is hosting dozens of recruits Saturday for their second junior day event in a week’s time. The focus of this one will be for the new Rutgers staff to build relationships with the players and their families. Last Saturday’s visitor’s list was composed mostly of in-state talent, clearly placing an emphasis on New Jersey players staying home. And although there will be many N.J. prospects in attendance today as well, there appears to be more out-of-state flavor with this group.

We will follow-up in-depth with many of the visitors throughout the next couple weeks. But in the meantime, check out a few quick reactions from some of today’s visitors:

Note:Be sure to check back as impressions will be added throughout the weekend.

Bryce Watts, ATH, Toms River North (new offeree): “The Rutgers junior day was amazing. I had the opportunity to hang with coaches Aaron Henry, Burnham and Hewitt. I loved how much emphasis the program places on life after football. Rutgers is doing a wonderful job with trying to keep their top talents in the state opposed to letting them escape. During lunch, coach Burnham gave me my first offer which was a mind-blowing experience. I have received interest from UNC, Temple, Iowa, Mizzou and Virginia. If I had to choose today, Rutgers would be my first choice. Today was a great day.”

Ryan Solt, DT, James M. Coughlin (Wilkes-Barr, Pa.) (new offeree): “It was awesome, they offered!!! There’s nothing that didn’t stand out today. I loved every aspect of Rutgers and love all of the changes that coach Ash is doing at Rutgers. Every coach is so down to earth and I’m starting to build some great relationships and I can’t wait to be back.”

Darien Tipps-Clemons, LB, Piqua (Ohio) (New offeree): “Visiting Rutgers today was amazing. I learned a lot about them because at first I didn’t know much. The coaches there are great — high energy and gave a me a really good feel for their program. I loved the facilities, too. I think they have an amazing program and they are on the rise. I hung out with Donte Taylor, a DB from Akron. We sat together and ate lunch. Rutgers is definately in the top right now. Great place.”

Tommy Christ, DT, Dominion (Sterling, Va.) (new offeree): “The visit was great. Very special offer to get because my uncle played there. We had an awesome time and I love the school.”

Tim Barrow, WR, Tottenville (N.Y.) (new offeree): “My junior day visit was great. I had a lot of fun, got to know the program a lot more and got to speak with the coaches and build a relationship with them. There were a lot of things that stood out to me during the visit. I can honestly say that coach Ash is really doing a great job with the program and is a man with a mission. I was mostly with coach Busch and coach Williams and what they were both saying were how they enjoyed my film. Rutgers is the only school that recruited me. And I plan to visit again soon.”

Tayvon Bowers, QB, Bishop McDevitt (Wyncote, Pa.) (new offeree): “Today was an excellent experience — a great time with great coaches and great staff members. I spent a lot of time with coach Mehringer, I like him a lot. Coach Ash has an amazing plan for the program and those that are in it. I was very impressed with all the facilities. I had a great time.”

Mark Webb, WR, Archbishop Wood (Warminster, Pa.): “I thought everything was great. The coaches, everything. You can see the difference already. They’re going to do something special. Their key message today was either jump on the ship and be something special or sink. They’re building to win. I talked to coach Jafar the most today. He was just telling me I could come in and make huge a impact. Didn’t talk to other recruits. Their neutral, right now. Waiting to see what they have come May.”

Damion Barber, DE, Harrisburg (Pa.): “I went up there with my coach and Shaquon Butts, my teammate. I ain’t really hang with recruits, all I did was talk to the new coaches and met the staff. I’m trying to build a great relationship with all the coaches. And I love the food court, it’s great. One of the coaches were like I’ll be a great fit for the team and get a great education, graduate and everything else. And I can’t wait to go back up there.”

Al-Tariq Jones, DB, Union: “On my visit today what really stood out to me and caught my eyes were the vision that coach Ash has for the program and the direction he’s trying to take it. He’s making a big difference. I hung out with K.J. Gray, the Rutgers commit, and also got a chance to meet Devin Darrington. Coach Hewitt likes me a lot at corner. He’s likes my size and speed. Coach K, the running backs coach, likes the way I see the holes, my speed and vision. Rutgers sits very high on the schools that are recruiting me. It feels just like home, I feel comfortable there.”

Artur Sitkowski, QB, Old Bridge (2018): “I had a great time at Rutgers. The thing that stood out to me the most was what coach Ash is doing with the program, especially the strength and conditioning program under direction of coach Parker. I spent the time with my teammate T.J. Townsend and chatted with Justin Shorter and Tim Barrow. From the coaching staff, I talked to coach Ash, coach Burnham, coach Mehringer, and also coach Vallone. They told me that they really like my tape and believed I would be a good fit for their offense and confirmed that my offer still stands. Rutgers is still one of my top options in my recruitment and I am looking forward to come back in the spring.”

Tweets from the second leg of Rutgers junior day

J.P. Roane, WR, Deptford: “Rutgers was great once again. This is my third time visiting Rutgers and every time is like a brand new experience. Coach Ash and the new coaching staff brings an electricity and vibe to Rutgers and New Jersey as whole — such a vibe that it makes me want to play for Rutgers and for the state of New Jersey. And I’m not only talking about the athletic part, also the academic part. It’s also important how well we perform on the field. But it’s the same we should preform in the class room which is very true. Also what caught my attention, Rutgers helps you after the game which is key because football doesn’t last forever. So what are you gonna do after and how are you going to be successful? Most the time I spent the day with Eric Smith from Williamstown. But among the other schools, Rutgers is very high on my recruiting list after this exciting day at the birthplace of college football.”

Kyle Nunez, OG, East Islip (Islip Terrace, N.Y.): “Rutgers is a first class university and I’m so excited to get involved with them during the recruiting process. I mostly hung around Jeremy Ruckert from Lindenhurst. I talked to coach Blazek, the o-line coach. He said he wants to get me to camp so we can move forward with the process and see where I’m at. Rutgers has definitely showed the most interest so far and they are a top school for me moving forward.”

Jahan Dotson, WR, Nazareth (Pa.) (2018): “Today has been great so far. The speeches by coach Ash and coach Parker really stood out to me and how they emphasize attitude and effort. The locker room was extremely cool and I like how everything is gonna be brand new almost. I’ve hung out with Shaquon Anderson-Butts and ate lunch with Zach Banks. I’ve talked a lot with coach Williams and coach Okruch just about getting here more and stuff. This is my first visit and I am loving it.”

Gyair Sharper, ATH, Clearview: “I had a great time at Rutgers. I knew it was a big-time school before I went and they definitely lived up to the reputation. I spoke with several of the coaching staff, the running backs coach, coach Ash, the head coach, and coach Willliams, the wide receivers coach. The players from Rutgers also had a presentation about the program and were elaborating on different topics like work ethic, campus life ,nutrition and workouts and stuff like that. After the visit today I can definitely say that Rutgers is a great school and I would highly recommend going there. I loved it out there.”

Alex Molina, RB, New Milford: “I really liked their message about how they plan on changing their system and what their program is really about. They spoke about the system they’re installing and how it has worked elsewhere. They were confident how it will work at Rutgers. It was actually a great experience. I was really impressed by the confidence in the coaching staff and the coaching staff’s confidence for the future.”

Jyvon Brown, QB, Irvington: “Something that stood out to me today was how young the coaching staff was. I believe that Rutgers will be on their way to big things for like the next couple of years. There wasn’t really a specific recruiter that I was talking to. It was like when I passed them, I had a conversation with them just to get my name across to everyone. Rutgers stands pretty high among the other schools that are recruiting me.”

Matt McElroy, LB, New Milford (2018): “I liked Rutgers a lot today. I went with Alex Molina and stuck with him most of the time there until the coaches split us up for position meetings. Coach ash said they are getting a brand new weight room and he is making many improvements to their program. Their message that their program is going to do great things very soon really stuck with me. Right now, I don’t really have any favorites between the schools recruiting me, but Rutgers was definitely great.”
