HEMPSTEAD, TEXAS – A former Prairie View A&M football player was killed at a private party near the school’s campus, school officials confirm.
School officials stress there was no connection to the university other than the party’s proximity to campus.
Former student Darius Matthew Edwards, 22, was transported by ambulance after he was shot, but he was later pronounced dead.
The Waller County Sheriff’s Office says he was shot shortly after midnight Wednesday at 23377 FM 1098 in Hempstead.
Police are still looking for a suspect.
Students tell us they were partying in a field when, shortly after midnight, someone fired shots at Edwards. Emergency crews responded to the scene to find Edwards lying in a truck bed with multiple gunshot wounds. They took him to the hospital, where he later died.
Even though Edwards didn’t attend or play at PVAMU anymore, the football team says he was still very much a part of their Panther family, and they say he’ll be very missed.
“Very outgoing, funny guy, very funny guy and I tell you if you knew Darius he would give you his all,” said Edwards’ former coach, Bubba McDowell.
Coach McDowell says Edwards’ was also the father to a beautiful little boy, who he was very proud of.
The investigation is still underway by the WCSO and the Texas Rangers.
The school’s athletics department later released this statement:
