FINAL: Texas A&M 79, UK 77
A Tyler Davis put-back at the buzzer gives A&M the win in overtime. Just a heartbreaking finish for UK and Isaac Humphries.
UK 77, Texas A&M 77 (4.1, OT): Crazy sequence as Isaac Humphries appeared to have clinched UK’s win by grabbing a rebound and drawing a foul with nine seconds left but was whistled for a technical foul after spiking the ball in celebration. A&M’s Danuel House made both technical free throws to give Texas A&M the lead, and Skal Labissiere, who replaced Humphries after fouling out made one of two to tie the game.
UK 76, Texas A&M 75 (1:00, OT): A Tyler Ulis floater has given Kentucky the lead with one minute left in overtime. Ulis now has 22 points and 11 assists. Jamal Murray has 21 points for UK. Difficult to overstate the impact of Isaac Humphries too, who has six points and 11 rebounds. He hit both free throws in overtime. Since Marcus Lee fouled out, John Calipari has gone to a very small lineup with Ulis, Murray, Isaiah Briscoe, Dominique Hawkins and Humphries on the floor. Humphries and Briscoe each have four fouls.
UK 68, Texas A&M 68 (0:00, 2H): For the second consecutive season UK is going to overtime in College Station. Danuel House missed a jumper with four seconds left, then Tyler Ulis’ three-quarter court heave at the buzzer was well short. Keep in mind both Marcus Lee and Isaiah Briscoe have four fouls for UK. Derek Willis is out with an ankle injury.
UK 68, Texas A&M 68 (0:22, 2H): UK tied the game at 68 with a lob dunk from Marcus Lee off a pass from Tyler Ulis, but Lee missed a chance to give UK the lead when he missed the front end of a one-and-one after being fouled on a defensive rebound. A&M has the ball with around a second left between the shot clock and game clock.
Texas A&M 68, UK 66 (0:50, 2H): A Tyler Ulis block of all things has given UK the ball back with a chance to tie or take the lead. Ulis has 20 points, and nine assists. Jamal Murray has 17 points. Isaiah Briscoe has 11 points and six rebounds. UK is 9 for 17 from 3-point range and is shooting 52.2 percent from the field. Jalen Jones leads Texas A&M with 19 points.
Texas A&M 67, UK 66 (2:06, 2H): A&M has the ball, up one after Jamal Murray has found an opening on UK’s last two possessions. He hit a 3-pointer on one, and then earned a trip to the foul line for two free throws on the second.
Texas A&M 63, UK 61 (3:49, 2H): UK has the ball with a chance to tie or take the lead after the final media timeout of the half, but foul trouble has become a significant issue for the Wildcats. Marcus Lee is back in the game with four fouls, but Isaiah Briscoe also has four after being whistled for a charge on one end of the court and a block on the subsequent A&M possession. Dominique Hawkins replaced him for the last defensive possession. A&M has done an excellent job defending Jamal Murray this half. He’s got four points since intermission. Isaac Humphries now has four points and seven rebounds.
Texas A&M 61, UK 59 (6:40, 2H): Tyler Ulis has helped Kentucky claw back into this one with six consecutive points (the first four came in one burst at the free-throw line after the Texas A&M technical),but Derek Willis just had to be escorted from the court with a right ankle injury. He was unable to put any weight on his right leg and had to be helped to the locker room by a UK trainer and the injured Alex Poythress. Isaac Humphries has contributed a couple of rebounds and a put-back layup since Marcus Lee went to the bench with his fourth foul, but Texas A&M still has a 20-9 advantage in second-chance points. Ulis leads UK with 20 points.
Texas A&M 59, UK 51 (11:30, 2H): Texas A&M has its largest lead of the game after an Alex Caruso steal led to a fast-break dunk from Danuel House, who has five points one year after scoring 25 against Kentucky. Some good news for UK, as Tyler Ulis just drew a foul and the Texas A&M bench was assessed a technical foul after the call. Ulis leads UK with 14 points and seven assists. Isaac Humphries just scored his first two points of the game and may need to play a big role down the stretch if Kentucky is to have any chance to reverse a 19-3 Texas A&M advantage in offensive rebounds.
Texas A&M 55, UK 49 (13:01, 2H): John Calipari needs a timeout as Texas A&M has opened up a six-point lead thanks to a 7-0 run. Jalen Jones now has 18 points and five rebounds for the Aggies, who are 9 for 18 from 3-point range and have a 19-3 advantage in offensive rebounds.
Texas A&M 47, UK 46 (15:57, 2H): Great finish shaping up in College Station. Texas A&M just retook the lead on a Tyler Davis putback, and he’ll have a chance to complete the three-point play after the timeout. Marcus Lee picked up his third foul for Kentucky. Davis has eight points and nine rebounds, including eight offensive boards. Texas A&M now up to 17 offensive rebounds as a team and has a 14-4 advantage in second-chance points. There have been 21 lead changes and six ties so far in the game. Tyler Ulis is up to 11 points and seven assists. Jamal Murray has 12 points. Texas A&M’s Danuel House is finally on the board with a 3-pointer after missing his first six shots.
HALFTIME: Kentucky 36, Texas A&M 35
A Derek Willis 3-pointer with 13 seconds left gave Kentucky the lead heading into the locker room, but John Calipari was far from happy with his team’s rebounding performance in a halftime interview with ESPN. “If we don’t rebound, we will not win the game,” Calipari said. Texas A&M has a 25-14 advantage in total rebounds and a 15-1 advantage in offensive boards. The Aggies have outscored UK 12-2 in second-chance points. Both teams have done the majority of their offensive damage from 3-point range. UK is 7 for 11 from beyond the arc, and Texas A&M is 6 for 15. Tyler Ulis leads UK with 11 points and five assists. Jamal Murray has eight points. Marcus Lee totaled four points and four rebounds but has two fouls.
Texas A&M 29, UK 25 (4:09, 1H): The two teams have combined to score 61.1 percent of the total points from 3-point range. UK is 5 for 9 from beyond the arc, and even Isaiah Briscoe has gotten in on the action with his first 3-pointer since Dec. 12 against Arizona State. He was 0 for 12 from 3-point range in SEC play entering the game and had missed 17 consecutive 3-point attempts. Tyler Ulis now has five points and four assists. Skal Labissiere contributed his patented elbow jumper but was just pulled from the game by an angry Calipari after a defensive lapse.
Texas A&M 20, UK 17 (7:53, 1H): Aggies starting to gain some momentum and finally have scored from inside the 3-point arc. Tyler Davis will have a chance to finish a three-point play after the timeout. Jamal Murray leads UK with eight points, but Aggies guard Alex Caruso is doing a decent job cutting off Murray’s driving ability. He has left Murray open for two 3-pointers. Both teams are doing damage from 3-point range, where Kentucky is 3 for 7 and Texas A&M is 5 for 11. Tyler Ulis has three early assists. Texas A&M has a 16-10 advantage in rebounds.
UK 11, Texas A&M 9 (11:19, 1H): UK getting some important contributions from its bench early tonight. Freshman forward Isaac Humphries has three rebounds and two blocks. Junior guard Dominique Hawkins hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at nine, before a Tyler Ulis jumper gave the Wildcats the lead. Jalen Jones still has all nine points for Texas A&M, which is now 0 for 9 from inside the 3-point arc. Aggies star Danuel House, who scored 25 points against Kentucky in a double-overtime game last season, is 0 for 4 from the field.
UK 6, Texas A&M 6 (15:58, 1H): Jalen Jones has all six points for Texas A&M with two 3-pointers as the two teams are tied at the first media timeout. The Aggies are 2 for 5 from 3-point range but 0 for 4 from inside the 3-point arc. Marcus Lee appears to have no trouble with his back. He has four of UK’s six points and two rebounds. Jamal Murray also has two points. UK is shooting 50 percent from the field. Texas A&M is shooting 22.2 percent. Neither team has a turnover.
* UK STARTERS: Ulis, Briscoe, Murray, Willis and Lee. So all the worry about Willis and Lee the last 48 hours looks, for now, to be no big deal.
