FINAL: Kentucky 85, Stony Brook 57
UK 76, Stony Brook 50 (3:59, 2H): With the outcome decided here, John Calipari is getting his starters some rest. Tyler Ulis’ night appears finished as he’s put his warmup back on on the bench. He has 10 points and seven assists. Jamal Murray (19 points, seven rebounds) and Alex Poythress (12 points, four rebounds) have also checked out. UK 68, Stony Brook 38 (7:52, 2H): What was a pro-Stony Brook crowd thanks to Indiana fans latching onto the underdog as thinned considerably with UK fans and the Stony Brook section the only fans left in the arena. UK fans not used to being outnumbered in neutral sites, but it has been a true definition of the term tonight. As for the actual game, Stony Brook continues to struggle and has missed its last six shots. For the game Stony Brook is now shooting 22.6 percent (14 for 62) from the field and 18.2 percent (2 for 11) from 3-point range. UK is up to 48.1 percent for the game thanks to a 75 percent mark (15 for 20) in the second half.
UK 62, Stony Brook 32 (11:36, 2H): This is officially a blowout. UK has its lead to 30 points after hitting 10 of its last 11 shots. After struggling mightily in the first half, Jamal Murray now has 17 points on 6-of-14 shooting. He’s hit all five of his shots in the second half, including two 3-pointers. Tyler Ulis now has the single-season assist record all to himself at 243 with eight points and seven assists tonight. Isaiah Briscoe is closing in on his second double-double with seven points and 10 rebounds so far. UK now at 46.9 percent from the field for the game.
UK 47, Stony Brook 25 (15:42, 2H): UK’s 3-point streak is intact after a Derek Willis shot from deep. The Cats are now 1 for 8 from 3-point range in the game. Tyler Ulis has now tied the single-season assist record (241) set by John Wall in 2009-10. He has eight points and five assists in the game. Jamal Murray starting to come out of his funk. He’s got nine points and five rebounds.
UK 42, Stony Brook 23 (17:03, 2H): Kentucky with a 9-4 advantage so far in the second half to stretch its lead to a game-high 19 points. Alex Poythress is up to 10 points, giving him a double-digit point total in six straight games for the first time in his career. Tyler Ulis is now one assist from tying John Wall’s single-season record (241). After struggling for most of the night with his shot, Jamal Murray just made a left-handed layup. He has seven points on 2-of-10 shooting. Isaiah Briscoe is filling his normal do-a-little-of-everything role with five points and eight rebounds. UK is 4 for 6 in the second half and has yet to attempt a 3-pointer since intermission.
HALFTIME: Kentucky 33, Stony Brook 19
UK will get no style points for its first-half display, but John Calipari and his team will take a 14-point lead into the locker room. Kentucky shot just 32.4 percent (11 for 34) from the field and missed all seven of its 3-point attempts, but Stony Brook was even worse with a 7-for-37 mark (18.9 percent) from the field and 0-for-5 mark from 3-point range. Alex Poythress leads UK with eight points, and Skal Labissiere contributed six points, four rebounds, five blocks and one steal. Tyler Ulis has six points and three assists and is just two assists from tying John Wall’s single-season record (241). Isaiah Briscoe totaled five points and six rebounds. Jamal Murray was 1 for 9 from the field with four total points. UK held Stony Brook star Jameel Warney to six points on 3-of-10 shooting, but he already has 10 rebounds.
UK 26, Stony Brook 13 (3:56, 1H): Stony Brook ended a stretch of 14 consecutive misses with a 3-pointer at the 5:37 mark but has since missed two more shots to bring its percentage to 13.3 (4 for 30) so far. Alex Poythress leads UK with eight points. Isaiah Briscoe and Derek Willis each have five rebounds to go with two points. Tyler Ulis has four points and three assists. Jamal Murray is 1 for 5 from the field with two points. UK has missed its first six 3-point attempts, including three from Murray. Believe it or not, Stony Brook guard Carson Puriefoy has three assists despite his team having just four field goals.
UK 16, Stony Brook 10 (7:02, 1H): Indiana and Chattanooga may have used up all the points tonight. Stony Brook is now 3 for 27 (11.1 percent) from the field and 0 for 5 from 3-point range. UK is doing little better at 27.3 percent (6 for 22) from the field. The Wildcats are also 0 for 5 from 3-point range. Skal Labissiere is pretty much the only positive from the first 13 minutes tonight. Dominique Hawkins did score on an impressive drive to the basket and kept a possession alive with an offensive rebound. He’s staying in the game for Jamal Murray out of the timeout.
UK 10, Stony Brook 8 (11:25, 1H): Not exactly an offensive exhibition tonight. Two teams are a combined 6 for 32 from the field and 0 for 5 from 3-point range. Skal Labissiere up to four points, two rebounds, four blocks and one steal, but he had a second dunk attempt blocked. Alex Poythress has four points for UK. Isaiah Briscoe has two. The other Wildcats are a combined 0 for 5 from the field. Tyler Ulis does have three assists and is now just two from tying John Wall’s single-season record (241). Isaac Humphries and Dominique Hawkins checking in for the first time out of the timeout.
UK 6, Stony Brook 4 (14:56, 1H): Slow start for both teams offensively: UK is 2 for 7 and Stony Brook is 2 for 11. Skal Labissiere with some early contributions for the Wildcats. He’s got two points, two blocks and one steal and has been handed the early assignment guarding Stony Brook star Jameel Warney. A couple of shaking moments for Labissiere though when he had a dunk rejected at/by the rim and messed up an Isaiah Briscoe attempted lob to Marcus Lee by being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Lee just picked up his second foul and is headed to the UK bench after the timeout.
