Google Fiber is expanding. After proving to be successful in providing Internet access to several states, it has decided to extend offerings to phone services. And with that, it has come up with its very own Fiber Phone.

The public became aware of the service back in January after a secret invitation to the phone service was leaked. And now, it is finally official. The tech giant has announced the news through its blog post written by Google Fiber Product, Manager John Shriver-Blake this Tuesday, March 29.

The announcement says, “Whether it’s calling mom or ordering take-out, we rely on our phones to help reach the people and things that matter. And while mobile phones have pushed us toward the future, home phone service is still important to many families. Landlines can be familiar, reliable and provide high-quality service, but the technology hasn’t always kept up. That’s why today, we’re introducing Fiber Phone as a new option to help you stay connected wherever you are.”

And indeed, although people rely on smartphones these days, most people still tend to have home phones in case of emergencies and battery drainage. Some even prefer to have it as a means to connect to the world.

And with the new addition to Fiber’s offered services, the tech giant can now join the competition for the “Triple Play” home offerings, reports Ars Technica. Triple Play is used to refer to a bundle of an Internet, TV and phone service all provided by a single company.

In addition to the regular Google Fiber bill, the phone service costs USD $10 per month for unlimited local and nationwide calling. International calls are charged using the Google Voice’s international rates.

When one applies for the phone service, the user will receive a VOIP box which will bridge the user’s new-school fiber connection to an old-school landline phone. In a sense, it is like modern-meets-old or a modernized version of the standard phones people have come to know.

The search engine’s Fiber Phone will be rolled out to select areas during its initial launch, but it will soon become an option to consumers in every city that the Google Fiber has reached. For cities the service reaches, new users have an option to keep their old numbers or have a new one. Familiar phone features like caller ID, 911 services and call-waiting will still be available, reports Digital Trends.

The service will also have privacy controls such as spam filtering, call screening and do-not-disturb modes. For interested consumers, they can sign up at the phone service’s page. The tech giant also set up a page on the Google Fiber site regarding the phone for more information.
