PLAINVILLE — The Wheeler Regional Family YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day returns April 30, offering free games, demonstrations and family activities from noon to 3 p.m. at the Plainville YMCA.
The event will feature outdoor games, an obstacle course, rock wall climbing, martial arts demonstrations, farm animals, goodie bags, tours of Camp Wheeler and information on YMCA camps Jewell, of Colebrook and Woodstock, of Woodstock Valley. Valentine the Clown will provide entertainment.
Mary Perlini, business office manager at the local YMCA, said Healthy Kids Day has been held for more than five years in Plainville and typically attracts as many as 200 children and their families. It is part of the YMCA’s effort, she said, to help kids to stay active and be a part of the community.
“It’s a great way to kick off the summer season,” she said.
One of the popular games Perlini said will be held is the “gladiator-style” “ga-ga” dodge ball game. Forty children will enter a giant, inflatable arena and compete until the last remains standing. There is only one ball and players hit it at each other with their hands. Players can only hit other players from the waist down and if they hit someone on the head, they’re out.
Kids will also be able to try out the activities at Camp Wheeler’s Star Wars Camp, which includes fighting with lightsabers made from pool noodles and PVC pipes.
Perlini said Healthy Kids Day is not limited to just Plainville and encouraged anyone interested to come and join in.
“Healthy Kids Day is a great way to get outside and play and enjoy a free, fun, family day,” she said.
