Laremy Tunsil’s admission during the first round of last week’s NFL draft that he took money from an assistant coach during his time at Ole Miss left his former coach, Hugh Freeze, “shocked like everyone else,” Freeze said Thursday.

“I know nothing,” Freeze said. “I’m not involved in the fact-finding process. But I’m confident that our administration is going to find the facts and then give us a good report.”

In one of the wilder scenes in NFL draft history, Tunsil slid to the No. 13 pick, taken by the Miami Dolphins, after video of him smoking a bong while wearing a gas mask was posted to his Twitter account; he had been projected to be selected as high as first overall during the weeks leading into the draft.

Minutes after being selected, two screen grabs of conversations during which Tunsil asked an Ole Miss assistant coach for money to help pay his mother’s electric bill were posted to Tunsil’s Instagram account. Asked during a post-selection press conference if he had accepted money from a coach while at Ole Miss, Tunsil replied, “I have to say yeah.”

The ensuing controversy comes at a time when Ole Miss is already under scrutiny. In March, the NCAA issued a Notice of Allegations listing 13 potential rule violations by the Rebels’ football program, with nine of those violations occurring since Freeze was hired in 2012.

“I’m not in the process of the fact-finding,” said Freeze. “I’ll be very quick to come out and defend us when it’s something that we know the facts on. I don’t at this present time. I know that our administration is working and I’m told they made a lot of progress, but they’re collecting everything to make sure they know exactly what the facts are before we run out and make any type of response.

“I’m trying to be patient. That’s difficult on me sometimes, because you want to respond. But there’s great wisdom in being patient and making sure you get the facts, and we’re still in that process.”

The administration has “made a lot of progress” in its search for a resolution to the NCAA’s allegations, Freeze said.

“The facts are always more important than speed and our public response,” he said. “Our administration will continue to work with all the parties and reach a conclusion as soon as possible, and we’re hopeful that’s coming quickly. We haven’t discussed the next step. You get the facts first and then you know a lot more after that.”
