The former Texas A&M football player accused of using a machete to kill a jogger at White Rock Lake last year has been found incompetent to stand trial.
Thomas Johnson will be sent to North Texas State Hospital for up to 120 days of treatment and evaluation “with a likelihood that he will regain competency in future,” his attorney Jennifer Balido said.
A Dallas County magistrate found the 21-year-old incompetent Monday based on a court-ordered mental health expert’s report, Balido said.
He’d begun acting oddly, breaking into his old high school locker room and talking about being the “chosen one.” He babbled about biblical characters and came to believe in a talking teddy bear.
Johnson was diagnosed with schizophrenia before the slaying, relatives said.
On Oct. 12, police say a cyclist spotted 53-year-old marathoner Dave Stevens face down on the White Rock Creek Trail, beside a man who was hacking at Stevens’ neck with an ax. Police say Johnson confessed to the random killing.
Two weeks later, Stevens’ wife of 25 years, Patti, killed herself at age 54. The couple had no children.
Before she died, Patti Stevens told The Dallas Morning News that she was overwhelmed by grief. She said she couldn’t eat, sleep or think clearly without her husband.
“Dave was the love of my life and I’m lost without him,” she said.
She was later found in her garage, a neighbor said, dead from apparent carbon monoxide poisoning.Twitter: @smervosh
