– The Memorial Day holiday weekend is upon us and so are the infamous traffic delays that it brings with it.

For motorists heading to Maryland’s Eastern Shore, the delays began early Thursday morning. Police closed all eastbound lanes of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge after a distraught man climbed onto a steel girder. The eastbound lanes were closed for nearly two hours causing traffic backups several miles long. the man was helped to safety and traffic reopened around 8 a.m.

The Bay Bridge is the main artery connecting Washington, D.C. and Baltimore to Maryland’s Eastern Shore. The busiest road travel days of the Memorial Day weekend traditionally had been Friday and Monday, however, in recent years, Thursday has become a popular day for thousands of motorists to get a head start to the beach.

Traffic experts say that the worse time to hit the road if you’re driving to your holiday destination is between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Thursday.

Air travel is expected to increase to nearly 3 million people. At this time no significant delays have been reported at any of the D.C. area airports.

AAA Mid-Atlantic estimated that 966,000 Washington area residents will travel more than 50 miles from their homes this holiday weekend.
