EAST LANSING — Michigan State is in its third week of the winter conditioning program inside the Duffy Daugherty Football Building, and recently shared pictures from a workout on its Twitter account.

The Spartans won’t begin spring football practices until March 22, presumably in East Lansing. Coach Mark Dantonio said at last week’s Spartan Winter Tailgate in Grand Rapids that he was considering moving spring practice to an off-site location.

Michigan football is practicing in Bradenton, Florida, over spring break, and Dantonio said he thought that was a “creative” idea. He mentioned Texas and Florida as possibilities for the Spartans.

One of the reasons that Dantonio typically starts spring football later than most other schools is he prefers to practice outside, even though Michigan State has a well-equipped indoor football facility.

The Spartans lost 11 of 22 position starters from last season’s 12-2 Big Ten championship team, so there are plenty of ongoing position battles, most notably at quarterback in the wake of Connor Cook’s departure.

Dantonio said fifth-year senior Tyler O’Connor will start spring No. 1, but Damion Terry, Brian Lewerke and Messiah deWeaver will all have the opportunity to compete.

Michigan State’s annual Green-White spring game takes place at 3 p.m. April 23 at Spartan Stadium, but Dantonio has said he doesn’t plan to pick a starting quarterback until September.

The Spartans are looking to replace departed starters on the offensive and defensive lines, and the coaches have also said they plan to shorten the tailback rotation.

Here are some pictures from the workouts, via the Michigan State football Twitter account. In the past, the gold jerseys have represented players who are performing at or near the top of their position groups in the winter workouts.
