Crown and Council is a new casual strategy game from Minecraft maker Mojang, and without a single whit of fanfare, the company released this game Saturday on the Steam platform. There were no announcements, no image or video teases – suddenly, it just showed up on Steam, available for everyone to check out.
According to Mojang, the game is “about conquering land and obliterating rival monarchs,” which should be nothing strange to anyone who’s played games such as Clash of Clans. “Click adjacent land tiles to subdue them with your army, earning gold to fund further expeditions, defensive forts, naval attacks, universities and more,” the company continues in its official announcement for the game. “Muscle your opposition off the map! There can be only one ruler in these lands!”
Mojang goes on to explain that Crown and Council is the creation of the “multi-talented” Henrik Petterson. “His pixelated fast-paced strategy game is about dominating lands as a monarch and trying to keep rivals from doing the same,” the announcement continues. “Whether you want to gain control through military might or by funding universities is entirely up to you (and says absolutely nothing about your political leanings!)”
Crown and Council is a free title, so if you’re wary about so-called “stealth releases,” you’ve got nothing to lose. Then again, the fact that it comes from the same company that gave us Minecraft gives us good reason to believe the game has some promise.
