Nintendo has announced that its first smartphone game will launch in the UK on 31 March.

Miitomo — billed as a mixture of a social network, a Sims-like life simulator and Nintendo’s bizarre 3DS game Tomodatchi Life launched earlier this month in Japan and has already been downloaded more than a million times.

The UK launch will also see the app open for business in other European countries and the United States.

The app is described as a “free-to-start social experience that lets users spark one-of-a-kind conversations with friends in a whole new way using Mii characters”.

Despite its apparently slight intentions, it will be a major release for Nintendo, which has struggled to regain momentum after the problematic launch (and apparent demise) of its Wii U home console, and the continued development of its next-gen NX device — about which almost nothing is currently known.

Developed with Japanese mobile giant DeNA, the app is “free to start” but includes provision for micro transactions. Hardcore fans may have hoped for a straightforward mobile version of Super Mario or Zelda, but Nintendo clearly knows which way the winds of mobile gaming are blowing — for good, or ill.

Miitomo will be available on iOS and Android on Thursday, and you can get notified as soon as it is available by signing up on Nintendo’s website. Users can also import their Mii characters from the Wii U or 3DS using a QR code.

Early screenshots give an idea of how much aesthetic items will cost in Miitomo, but not how prices relate to real money.

“Want your friends to know all about these little insights into your likes, dislikes, or just what you’re thinking lately?” Nintendo asks. “Your Mii will go visit your friends’ Mii characters and tell them!

“Then your Mii will ask your friends for fun details about them…and tell YOU everything. Your friends’ Mii characters will also visit you when you play!”

Don’t miss

The launch will also see the arrival of the ‘My Nintendo’ rewards programme, which will offer free games and smaller rewards for loyalty to the Japanese gaming legend’s services. Pre-registering for Miitomo will automatically earn you reward points.

Nintendo also said that it will make it possible for users in the UK to buy and automatically download software to their devices via its website on Thursday– something not possible until now, despite that feature’s availability on PSN and Xbox Live.
