The timing of his return to Africa was auspicious. There was a growing need for design creatives and Payne found himself almost immediately in demand. It was the high tide of Kenya’s tourist industry, with innovative lodges, camps and coastal retreats springing up, and Payne established a design company specialising in brochures and PR materials for upmarket east African tourist resorts.

Some eight years later, his company had merged with the global firm TBWA to become TBWA Creative; Payne was its creative director, with more than 40 staff under him. But it was not to last. ‘A former partner and myself decided we wanted out of the advertising rat race, and on a research trip to India ended up doing a lot of shopping. On our return we opened Idea, the first home store in the country.’ Former clients started dropping by asking for help with the interiors for their lodges, and ‘when I suddenly landed a large project, I had to call Emma for help’, he recalls.
