Prince’s death, Day 8: Judge seals search warrant – USA TODAY

A real-time compilation of the latest news on the investigation into Prince’s death, the singer’s estate and tributes:

2:05 p.m. ET:  The Associated Press reported a Carver County, Minn., judge on Thursday sealed the search warrant for Prince’s home and any evidence coming from it, according to court documents. Disclosure of the details could “compromise this law enforcement investigation,” a sheriff’s deputy and prosecutor said in documents requesting the action.

The search warrant for Prince’s Paisley Park home and studio — carried out the day of his death — was filed Thursday under seal because investigators said it would hamper their investigation if the contents were made public.

11:12 a.m. ET: Billboard has unveiled its Prince tribute issue. The new issue includes pieces from longtime collaborator and ex-fiancée Sheila E., producer Jimmy Jam and superfan Tracy Morgan, who says the singer helped him cope with his own father’s death. He added that Prince was “was so pretty, I turned gay for about five seconds.”

10:45 am ET:  Local sheriff’s officials in charge of investigating Prince’s death pushed back against reports late Wednesday by NBC, ABC, CBS and CNN that prescription painkillers were found on his body and in his Paisley Park home in Chanhassen, Minn., outside Minneapolis, citing unidentified “law enforcement sources.”

The Minneapolis Star Tribune, reported that prescription pills were found but that it wasn’t clear whether they had been prescribed to Prince.

Carver County investigators have said the final word on the cause of Prince’s death could be weeks away, pending further testing.

Deputy Sheriff Jason Kamerud declined to comment on the reports of prescription drugs found at Paisley Park, but he told the Associated Press he strongly disputed claims that local investigators had asked the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration for help in the case.

“We have not asked them for help, or asked them to be a part of the investigation,” Kamerud said. “We might contact them to help us, but that hasn’t happened. We don’t have the medical examiner’s report yet. We don’t know to what extent pharmaceuticals could be a part of this.”

Reports of the possible role of painkillers in Prince’s death have been prominent in tabloid coverage since his still-mysterious emergency treatment at a hospital a week before he was found dead at Paisley Park.

Those reports were bolstered this week by Michael Padden, an attorney for two of Prince’s deceased half-siblings, who told reporters and local investigators that his clients informed him more than a decade ago that Prince had “substantial” drug problems with the opioid painkiller Percocet and cocaine.

8:14 a.m. ET: Rather than cover a Prince song during Wednesday’s Formation world tour opener, Beyoncé took a quieter approach. Instead, during an interlude, Prince’s own version of Purple Rain played against a purple-lit stage, allowing for a few minutes’ worth of singalong time and communal mourning.
