MURFREESBORO — An alumni game for the biggest high school football rivalry in Rutherford County is being planned for June.

Alumni Football USA has announced a Riverdale Alumni versus Oakland Alumni contest to be held on June 4 at Tomahawk Stadium.

“We’re really excited about it,” Riverdale football coach Will Kriesky said. “The opportunity to bring back some of the old Riverdale players is great for our kids. It’s a chance for them to see some of the past and learn the tradition at Riverdale.”

Both programs are currently searching for former players wanting to participate in the game, which will be full-contact. Both teams are required to have at least 20 players. Former players wanting to participate can register online at alumnifootballusa.com.

“We’ve got a few people interested,” Kriesky said. “We’ve recently started putting it on social media. Some are leery because it is full contact, but I think we’ll have at least 20.”

The game is for any alumni over age 18.

Riverdale holds a 32-15 high school football series edge over Oakland. However, the Patriots have won the past four meetings, including two wins in 2015.

Oakland coach Kevin Creasy said a Battle of the ‘Boro alumni game would be a chance to see some of the past standouts from the storied rivalry.

“It’s always been a big game,” Creasy said. “I’m glad to have an alumni game that features some of the great players that have played in some of the Battle of the ‘Boros. Some of these guys have never faced off against each other. It will be neat to see a guy from 10 years ago play against someone that graduated four years ago. There is a lot of interest.”

Currently the two schools have a two-year agreement. Next year, the game will be held at Oakland’s Ray Hughes Stadium.

The timing of the event is also key. TSSAA sports will have concluded. Likewise, high schools will be done with spring football practice.

“It’s about that time of year when people start to talk about the next season,” Creasy said.

Kriesky, who was named the Riverdale coach in February, said former Warriors William Henry and Gerald Griffin have reached out to former teammates to gauge interest.

“We’d like to bring back some of the past coaches too because they were a big part of their success,” Kriesky said.
