Studiocanal Taps Matthew Gledhill For Intl Production; Ups UK Chief Danny Perkins – Deadline

Studiocanal has expanded the role of its UK chief, Danny Perkins, and tapped Matthew Gledhill to join the Euro film player as SVP of international production. The moves come as the company looks to grow its already busy English-language slate under new head Didier Lupfer. Gledhill joins from One World Films, where he produced Viggo Mortensen-starrer Far From Men, adapted from an Albert Camus short story. Gledhill has worked with Lupfer before, serving as a supervising producer on 2011 biopic Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life.

That well-received take on iconic French singer-songwriter-bon vivant Serge Gainsbourg was actually produced by Lupfer before he went on to join Ubisoft as its head of development and production, where he would kickstart the feature film adaptations of vidgames Assassin’s Creed with Michael Fassbender, and the planned Splinter Cell with Tom Hardy. Studiocanal’s corporate parent, Vivendi, is currently attempting to acquire a controlling stake in Ubisoft, against the wishes of its founders the Guillemot brothers.

Gledhill will act as an exec producer on international feature films produced in-house by Studiocanal and also oversee titles produced by 3D animation subsid, nWave Pictures. Studiocanal’s current EVP of international production and acquisitions, Ron Halpern, will retain his current role overseeing the company’s entire slate of international films including as exec producer of international films developed with external producers. He also remains responsible for coordinating international acquisitions for all Studiocanal territories, as well as sourcing and developing new movie projects.

StudioCanal chief Lupfer made it a point to highlight Halpern’s contribution to the company as well as his continued leadership role while welcoming Gledhill. “Matthew’s arrival will strengthen an already robust team, which, under Ron’s leadership, has allowed StudioCanal to become a global benchmark in the production of high quality European films, capable of attracting some of the biggest talent our continent has to offer,” said Lupfer in a statement.

In an expanded role, Perkins will be responsible for all UK production, securing British talent and further developing this activity. The promotion comes as no surprise, given Studiocanal’s UK film operations have been spectacular under Perkins, with the likes of Tom Hardy gangster epic Legend and Michael Fassbender-Marion Cotillard-starrer Macbeth outperforming expectations thanks in part to the UK team’s savvy marketing campaigns. Perkins and Halpern have been at the forefront of aligning Studiocanal with A-list producers Working Title — who produced Legend — and David Heyman, with whom the company has financed and produced Paddington, whose worldwide grosses are in excess of $270 million. The company also has strong ties with Graham Broadbent and Blueprint Pictures. The two are working together currently on James Marsh’ Donald Crowhurst biopic starring Colin Firth and Three Miles North Of Molkom, written and directed by all-around comic whiz and long-time Sacha Baron Cohen collaborator Dan Mazer.
