“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” received blowback from critics for its action, characters and storyline. The production team claims to have listened to the fans.

Here are five huge things we need to see for “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” to be the best turtle film yet.

1. Amped-Up Action

Many IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes complaints described the action sequences as few and far between.

It appears the studio listened. Pete Ploszek, playing Leonardo, told Collider that the action is “mind blowing.”

Previews show more ninja in the fight scenes, tanks and numerous villains.

If these teasers are representative, “Out of the Shadows” will be the most action-packed film in the franchise.

2. More Villains

The main enemy in the 2014 “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” movie was Shredder. “Out of the Shadows” has re-cast Shredder and introduced Bebop and Rocksteady. Sneak previews also show Krang leading a swarm of aliens attacking New York.

Bay has used a “Star Wars” visual effects supervisor to master the look of these villains, according to Rolling Stone.

Fans want to see all of the favorite bad guys battling the turtles, and it appears Green and Bay are delivering.

3. Focus On The Turtles

ScreenRant admits that the exploits of April O’Neil distracted from the original film.

Jeremy Howard, who plays Donatello, told ScreenRant, “The first movie was one-third turtles, this is two-thirds turtles of just screen time alone.”

Noel Fischer, who plays Michelangelo said, “The story revolves a lot more around the four brothers … There’s a really great emotional arc, for how brothers interact when faced with challenges and have differences in how we are, how we view life and how we view ourselves.”

An emphasis on the four mutants would be a change for the better from the first film.

4. Throwbacks

ScreenRant lamented rumors about another change to the Turtles’ origin story. But it may be a change back to the source material. All evidence shows that the film will try to go back to ’80s comics and cartoons.

Ploszek told Collider, “Everyone’s paying attention to how people felt about the first one, what they want to see, and what ‘faithful’ means.”

Geek reports the return of the Turtle Van, Michelangelo’s rocket-skateboard and Krang’s spherical tank Technodrome. IMDb reports that a license plate appearing in the trailer reads “Mirage84” which references the Turtles’ first appearance in Mirage Comics.

Geek says “It looks like the Turtles are going back to their populist roots, just shy of 30 years after it made them millions the first time.”

If the rumors are true, this film will be packed with homages to the original turtle cartoons.

5. Different Tone

Producers and actors say that David Green’s genuine love for the comics will foster a fun tone.

Megan Fox told CinemaBlend,  “They hired a director who’s a super fan.” Andrew Form of Bay’s production company told Collider that Green used to dress up as Donatello as a kid.

Form said, “It’s all about the family and the brothers for him, and he stepped right into the machine of the movie and brings that.” Fox went on to say, “The tone of the movie should be funny. This isn’t Turtles in Gotham City, that’s the wrong way to take it.”

The Hundreds claimed, “It appears they’re eschewing … dark and gritty, instead favoring the off-the-wall, over-the-top silliness of the ’80s TMNT cartoon that helped the Turtles achieve mainstream success.” CinemaBlend describes a sneak clip as not taking itself too seriously and “downright awesome.”

Green’s fun-loving vsion may feel like the cartoons and make “Out of the Shadows” the best film yet.
