“America is becoming a dump,” says one reader in response to our recent story asking when America was last great – and this is from someone who says he grew up in Cuba, going to bed hungry and shoeless every night. “America is done,” the reader tells us. “I am working on moving out.”
Can America really be that bad? It’s a thoroughly divisive question. In a recent online survey we conducted, 32% of respondents said America is great now—in 2016. When we wrote about those survey results, however, it became clear why 68% of respondents feel America’s greatest days are in the past: Our politicians are corrupt, our policies are feckless, our people are lazy, and our business leaders are only in it for themselves. And oh yeah, our journalists are elitists in bed with the crony capitalists.
A bunch of readers flamed me through email and social media for daring to suggest that America is a great place now. Check out the video above to hear a few of the more colorful comments. It’s obvious a lot of Americans are mad as hell, since they’re flocking to the rebellious presidential campaigns of Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Bernie Sanders.
But is public anger deep and wide enough to throw the bums out in November? Or will an establishment candidate like Hillary Clinton win the day? We’ll find out soon enough, but in the meanwhile, we’re continuing the conversation: Is America a great country now? If it isn’t, when was it? And what must we do to become great again? Let us know on our Facebook or Twitter page, using the hashtag #greatagain. And consider being kind to the reporter: We’re just explaining how all of you seem to feel.
