NORTH CAROLINA — Travel agencies are now seeing some impact because
of the spread of the Zika virus, including cancellations or changes in
itinerary. Although many don’t anticipate a significant impact in
bookings, they do say questions from vacationers continue to increase.

Agents with AAA of the Carolinas are busy fielding questions from
concerned travelers as the number of Zika cases increases.

“Travelers were confused. What’s going to happen? I booked this
trip, what’s going to happen? So that’s what we were trying to do,
keep everyone informed,” said AAA Public Relations Manager
Tiffany Wright.

AAA says it is receiving more questions than cancellations, right
now. And agents are working to give members the most updated
information possible.

At Mann Travels, agents have had cancellations, but people are also
considering alternative destinations before they completely give up on
a vacation.

“It’s giving people an opportunity to think about other places
they want to travel,” said Roni Fishkin with Mann Travels. “This might
be the year they want to go to Alaska or to the U.S. national parks.
There’s a lot of other places people want to go. And a lot of them are
saying, ‘Well, you know what, maybe we’ll go there instead.'”

Trip insurance is another big question. AAA says coverage can be
tricky. It depends on what kind and when you purchased the insurance.

“It all depends on what tier you decided to go with,” said
Wright. “Check your benefits. We recommend travel insurance anytime
you’re traveling, especially with this.”

The CDC recommends pregnant women postpone any trips to areas where
the virus has been transmitted, as scientists work to learn more about
the dangers.
