Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR)’s Periscope just celebrated its one-year anniversary since it made its public debut. During the celebration, it noted that its users are watching 110 years of video on a daily basis. That number is more than double broadcasts Twitter announced just three months ago when it was introducing periscope live video streaming directly within users timeline. What makes the number more staggering is that they are only for Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL)’s Android and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s iOS. The company never counted replays, The Web, or streams viewed via Twitter.
Just to show the magnitude of this growth, a comparison of seven months ago and now is appropriate. Then, the company announced that users were watching 40 years’ worth of video on a daily basis. From this, we can deduce that this metric has been growing by about ten years per month though this is a rough calculation since the company has not yet released this data.
Periscope did not mention the number of users it has thought it is very likely the number rose steadily. The last time it discussed ‘hours watched,’ it noted that it had 10 million users. On a blog post on Medium, the company pointed out that users have created more than 200 million broadcast.
Periscope was acquired by Twitter in January 2015. It was kept in private beta until it officially launched last March. Only five months after its roll out it had more than 10 million user accounts.
Since Periscope was launched, a lot have changed. Meerkat the indie service that had debut first in time for the annual South by Southwest festival in Austin last year shifted to being a video network. Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) on the other end came out with Live – its take on video broadcasting platform. Google also has a rumored project where it will build its version though it has not been confirmed. Meanwhile, Periscope parent company is working to get itself back on track.
