ATHENS, Ga. – Two freshmen football players at University of Georgia were arrested early Tuesday morning in Athens.
FOX 5 Sports has confirmed that cornerback Chad Clay and defensive lineman Julian Rochester have been charged with having a weapon in school zone. They were booked into jail shortly after midnight Tuesday, according to the Athens-Clarke County Sheriff’s Office.
An official with UGA said the charged are related to possession of a BB gun and property damage.
The two students appear to be roommates, with the same address listed in their booking information.
Both Clay and Rochester are being held on a $5,000 bond.
“I’m disappointed with the poor judgment of Julian and Chad,” said UGA head coach Kirby Smart. “We expect full compliance with the policies of the University and of our football program from all our student-athletes. Information is still being gathered but they will be disciplined in an appropriate manner.”
Clay, an ESPN.com four-star prospect, graduated early from Peachtree Ridge High School and enrolled at UGA in January.
Rochester was the 2015 AAAAAA Defensive Player of the Year and helped McEachern advance to the second round of the state playoffs last year. He also enrolled at UGA in January.
Rochester and Clay are expected to appear for a bond hearing at some point on Tuesday, according to investigators.
