Virgin America reveals new logo … for real? – USA TODAY

Could Virgin America’s iconic script “Virgin” be disappearing from the tails of its planes? It seems possible, given reports this week that the carrier has received “takeover interest” from JetBlue, Alaska Airlines and possibly other suitors.

But a Thursday announcement by Virgin America saying it’s adopting a new logo appears to be an early April Fools’ Day joke.

The airline e-mailed its frequent-fliers Thursday to tell them of the new logo — as well as a logo-themed fare sale. Virgin America also detailed the new logo in its corporate blog, saying the company is “reimagining our corporate logo.”

Virgin America has rolled out April Fools’ jokes on March 31 in previous years, including one in 2015 in which it said it would begin service to Branson, Missouri. That family-oriented destination, of course, bears the same name as Sir Richard Branson, who helped launch Virgin America in 2007.

Presumably ironically, Virgin America’s apparent April Fools’ Day logo comes as the carrier is reportedly feeling out interest from potential buyers.

In a report from earlier this week, Bloomberg News writes:

“Discussions between Virgin America and the two bidders are ongoing, and a deal could be announced as early as next week, the people said, asking not to be identified discussing private information. It is unclear if other suitors will emerge, and Virgin America may yet decide to abandon sale negotiations in favor of remaining independent.”

The Bloomberg News report did not cite any named sources.

The Wall Street Journal followed up Bloomberg’s report with its own, writing: “A preferred buyer could emerge as early as this week, the person said, though a final deal could take longer to complete. The details of the potential offers couldn’t be determined.”

Similar to Bloomberg, the Journal cited only “a person familiar with the matter.”
