All the feels. The Voice’s executive producer Mark Burnett emotionally recalled how Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani were in their lowest moments last summer, following their respective divorces from Miranda Lambert and Gavin Rossdale.
“I was there in those dark moments,” Burnett, 55, recalled to Entertainment Tonight on Monday, May 9. “Because we were working together at the time. It was their private lives but it spills over.”
Shelton and Lambert shocked everyone last July when they announced they were divorcing after four years of marriage. Hours after they confirmed their split to Us Weekly, the country couple’s divorce was finalized.
Several weeks later, Stefani and her husband, Bush rocker Rossdale, announced they were parting ways after 11 years of marriage. A source exclusively revealed to Us that the cause of the split was Rossdale’s longtime affair with one of the family’s nannies, Mindy Mann.
During their painful breakups, the Voice coaches bonded over their failed relationships — and ultimately found solace in each other. Us broke the news that a flirtation was happening between Stefani, 46, and Shelton, 39, on the set of the NBC show, and her rep eventually released an exclusive confirmation to Us that they were an item in November.
“And then I said to Blake and Gwen, ‘Imagine in your darkest moments if someone showed you a videotape of right now,'” Burnett told ET on Monday. “‘The love you have, wouldn’t it be great?’ And they’re both smiling. It would be great. They are so amazing, they’re amazing.”
And how do Burnett and the other crew members feel about Bwen? “It’s great for us. We love them,” Burnett said of the colleagues’ romance. “I consider both Blake and Gwen separately to be very close friends, and both of them went through a lot.”
The couple debuted “Go Ahead and Break My Heart,” their very first collaboration, on Monday’s episode of The Voice. Stefani opened up to the New York Times in a memorable March 2016 interview, about bonding with Shelton after her crazy split from Rossdale.
“[He] had been going through literally the exact same thing in literally the exact same time frame,” Stefani told the paper. “Never in my wildest, craziest dreams would I ever have seen this coming.”
