Zootopia reaches $431 million globally, while 10 Cloverfield Lane opens strong

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Zootopia continued to dominated the box office worldwide this weekend. The animated hit dropped just 33% in tickets sales domestically to bring in $50 million in first place its second weekend for a total of $142.6 million. Internationally, Zootopia took in an additional $83.1 million to take its overseas total to $288.7 million and global total to $431.3 million. Holds were strong across all territories, including China, which posted an estimated $56.5 million to push the total box office there to $109 million in its 10th day of release. The film has surpassed Big Hero 6 to become the highest-grossing Disney Animation or Pixar release and #3 animated film of all-time in China. In generating the $56.5 million, Zootopia also posted the biggest and second-biggest single day results ever for an animated title in China. The film has yet to open in Australia, Brazil, Japan and the UK.

Opening in second place was Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot’s 10 Cloverfield Lane, the feature directorial debut of Dan Trachtenberg and starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman and John Gallagher Jr. Made for just $13 million, the thriller earned $25.2 million from 3,391 theaters, an average of $7,431 per theater. Produced by J.J. Abrams, 10 Cloverfield Lane earned $3.1 million on 376 IMAX screens in North America. The film received a B- CinemaScore from audiences.

Remaining in the third spot was 20th Century Fox’s Deadpool, starring Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, T.J. Miller, Gina Carano, Ed Skrein and Brianna Hildebrand. The comic book adaptation, which carried a budget of just $58 million, added $10.8 million domestically for a five-week North American total of $328 million. Internationally, Deadpool has now earned $380 million for a worldwide total of $708 million!

Gramercy Pictures’ London Has Fallen dropped two spots to fourth with $10.7 million. The $60-million sequel, starring Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart and Morgan Freeman, has earned $38.9 million domestically after two weeks.

Rounding out the top five was Paramount’s Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, which added $4.6 million its second weekend for a total of $14.6 million. The movie, starring Tina Fey, Margot Robbie, Martin Freeman, Alfred Molina and Billy Bob Thornton, cost $35 million to make.

Lionsgate and Codeblack Films’ The Perfect Match debuted in sixth place with $4.2 million from 925 theaters, an average of $4,486, while Focus Features’ The Young Messiah opened in seventh to $3.4 million from 1,761 theaters, an average of $1,933. There’s no CinemaScore for The Perfect Match, but The Young Messiah received an A-.

Finally, we have The Brothers Grimsby, directed by Louis Leterrier and starring Sacha Baron Cohen, Mark Strong, Isla Fisher, Rebel Wilson, Gabourey Sidibe and Penelope Cruz. The R-rated comedy earned just $3.2 million from 2,235 theaters in eighth place. Receiving a B+ CinemaScore, the film cost $35 million to make.
